The "Address Line 2" field is necessary for many types of online forms that require accurate customer information. For example, many online retailers use the second address line to determine whether or not a package should be delivered to an apartment building. This information is also crucial for international shipping. In addition, the USPS requires a secondary address line for information like suite or room numbers in some situations.

When users see an 'Address Line 2' field on a form, it often creates uncertainty about what to enter into the field. During testing, it was found that the majority of users do not understand what to type in this field. This can lead to errors in the data entered, as well as frustration for the user and a delay in completing the checkout process.
A common solution is to include a note on the form that says, "This field is OPTIONAL." This approach may work for some users, but others find this wording confusing or unclear. Other options include using a spillover field with basic instructions and examples on the right side of the screen or including a text box to explain the purpose of the second address line.
Another option is to hide the 'Address Line 2' field behind an expandable link that allows the user to click on it. During testing, we found that this approach can be helpful for some users and eliminates the confusion surrounding what to type in the field. However, this option can be misleading to other users who might need to fill in additional address information, such as those submitting a warranty claim for their new appliance or other service-related forms.
